New online mental health service launches in Newcastle and Gateshead

A new free, safe and anonymous online mental health service is now available for people living in Newcastle and Gateshead.

Togetherall is a place where you can safely voice your feelings and connect with others for your wellbeing. The service is available 24/7 and moderated by mental health professionals and led by an on-duty clinical team to ensure users are safe and supported.

Togetherall is the latest in a series of new mental health services commissioned for local people. It follows the recent launch of a mental health support line operated by Tyneside and Northumberland Mind (every day 8am to 10pm (age 16+) on 0330 174 3174 (charged at local rate), as well as the Qwell online counselling and emotional wellbeing service.

COVID - 19 - changes to rules 24.2.2022

From the 24th February 2022 you will still be required to wear a mask when entering the practice unless you are exempt. The guidance is from NHS England and is a requirement across all NHS services.

Who CANNOT attend – Children under the age of two years, chest pain, shortness of breath, head injuries with neurological symptoms, head/neck/shoulder/hip injuries or chemical injuries to the eye.

Conditions that CAN BE treated – coughs and colds; high temperature; simple cuts, grazes and bruises; strains and sprains; bites and stings; stomach upsets; ear, nose and throat problems; minor burns or scalds; emergency contraception; sexual health advice; minor skin infections or rashes; ear syringing and urinary tract infections.

Out-of-hours services are generally busy so please think carefully before asking to see a doctor and only do so if you genuinely cannot wait until the surgery re-opens.

Think Pharmacy First

Think Pharmacy First –

Allows people who receive free prescriptions to go straight to their pharmacy instead of their GP and received treatment for some minor ailments and illnesses.

Sometimes when you or your family are unwell, you may not need to make an appointment to see your GP (family doctor). Your local community pharmacist is a trained medical professional who can provide free advice on the best treatment for a wide range of illnesses and minor ailments.

As well as free medical advice, your local community pharmacy can now also provide free medication for some illnesses and minor ailments under a scheme called Think Pharmacy First. Think Pharmacy First allows people who receive free prescriptions to go straight to their pharmacist to receive treatment without needing to visit their GP to get a prescription first.

The scheme is available to adults who are entitled to free prescriptions on the grounds of low income and their children along with all people aged 60 or over

Which illnesses are included?

The service includes the following illnesses:

Aches & Pains, Bites & Stings, Chicken Pox, Cough, Colds, Infantile Colic, Cold Sores, Conjunctivitis, Constipation, Cystitis in Women, Diarrhoea, Dyspepsia, Ear Wax, Eczema or Dermatitis, Fungal Infections, Haemorrhoids, Hay Fever, Head Lice, Mouth Ulcers, Muscular aches & Pains, Nappy Rash, Teething, Threadworm, Thrush, Travel Sickness, Verrucas, Warts.

Where is Think Pharmacy First available?

You can go to any pharmacy across Newcastle, North Tyneside and Northumberland displaying a Think Pharmacy First window banner or door sticker to use the Think Pharmacy First scheme. A list of pharmacies participating in Think Pharmacy First is avilable to download:

You can go straight to any of the pharmacies across Newcastle, North Tyneside and Northumberland and you will be seen as soon as possible without having to make an appointment. The pharmacist will speak to you about your health condition and discuss with you what treatment you might need. Many pharmacies now have a consultation area if you feel you need to discuss things in private. You will be asked questions about your symptoms, including which medicines you are taking and information about your illness. It would be helpful if you took a list of any medicines you are using. This is to make sure that the treatment you are given is right for you. All details given to the pharmacist are confidential. If it is appropriate, the pharmacist will prescribe the right medicine for you. The pharmacist will tell you the best way to take the medicine and give you any extra advice you need to help with your illness.

Free treatment

To get free treatment you will need to sign the prescription the pharmacist prescribes and show proof that you do not have to pay. Proof could be your HC2 certificate, or income support. If you sign the form but cannot show proof then the pharmacist will still provide the medicine but checks will be made later. To receive free medicines for a child on the Think Pharmacy First scheme the parent or guardian must also be eligible for free prescriptions.
